These black slate floor tiles had become dull and heavily soiled after years of use, hiding the natural beauty of the stone. Our first step was to deep clean the floor using a specialist acid-based gel cleaner, followed by a handheld rotary machine fitted with a carbide brush to remove ingrained dirt and contamination from the textured slate.
Once the tiles were thoroughly cleaned, the existing grout was carefully removed before the slate was sealed with a premium impregnating sealer. We returned the following day to install fresh grout after the sealer had fully cured. Completing the work in this order prevents the new grout from staining the porous slate and produces a cleaner, more professional finish.
The result is a beautifully restored black slate floor with rich natural colour, crisp grout lines and long-lasting protection. The floor is now easier to maintain and better protected against everyday wear, moisture and staining.
Black slate is one of the most attractive natural stones used in homes across London, but its textured surface can trap dirt, soap residue and mineral deposits over time. Our specialist restoration process safely deep cleans the slate, restores its natural appearance and protects it with premium sealers to help keep it looking its best for years to come.

Can black slate be restored if it looks faded?
Yes. Most black slate loses its appearance because dirt becomes trapped in the textured surface or previous sealers begin to fail. Professional cleaning and resealing can dramatically improve the colour.
Do you use colour-enhancing sealers?
Where appropriate. Colour-enhancing sealers enrich the natural tones of black slate while providing long-lasting protection against spills and staining.
Can you remove limescale and soap residue from slate?
Yes. We use specialist stone-safe cleaning systems to remove mineral deposits and soap build-up without damaging the slate.
Do you work throughout London?
Yes. Doctor Grout restores black slate floors across London and the surrounding Home Counties.
Black slate requires specialist knowledge and the correct restoration techniques. Using the wrong cleaning products or sealers can permanently damage natural stone or leave an uneven finish.
At Doctor Grout, we use professional restoration methods tailored to each slate floor. From deep cleaning and grout replacement to premium sealing, every stage is carried out with care to achieve long-lasting results while protecting the natural beauty of the stone.
We work with homeowners, landlords, interior designers, hotels and commercial clients throughout London and the Home Counties, restoring black slate floors to the highest standard.
